Winter home improvement ideas
December 7, 2023Generator maintenance appointments: What to expect
March 11, 2024Many people invest in an in-home generator during the winter months, when ice storms and wintry weather make power outages miserable and dangerous.
But before you pull the trigger on an in-home generator, it is helpful to know not only what to do – but what mistakes to avoid.
Here are four mistakes not to make after you purchase an in-home generator.
- Don’t buy the wrong kind of generator. For many people, buying a generator is a large purchase and there is no one-size-fits-all option. It’s important to know which generator to buy and have it best meet your needs. Consulting with a trusted generator business can help you make the right decision.
- Don’t use the wrong type of fuel. For many of us, we want a generator to be plug and play, but knowing which kind of fuel to use (diesel, regular, propane, natural gas) is critical. If you just purchased your generator, make sure your salesperson has properly explained how to use and fuel it – so you don’t damage it the first time you use it.
- Don’t forget regularly scheduled maintenance work. It can be easy to forget about your generator if you go months or even years without using it, but neglecting regularly scheduled professional maintenance can take years off the life of your generator. And we know that isn’t want you want. Your generator salesperson can be a good source of information on when to schedule maintenance like changing the oil, updating the filters and more.
- Replacing your generator when needed. Generators don’t last forever and sometimes it can be hard knowing when to repair or replace yours. If your generator is more than 15 years old, or has more than 10,000 hours of use, it might be time for an updated machine.
No one wants to find out their generator is in disrepair when you need it the most, so make sure you aren’t making these common mistakes with your in-home generator.
