Four mistakes not to make after you purchase an in-home generator
January 30, 2024Does your small business need a backup power system?
May 7, 2024As power systems experts, we often recommend a regular generator maintenance appointment to keep your equipment in top operating shape.
But we don’t often tell you what to expect at a generator maintenance appointment.
When we come out to perform routine maintenance, there are a few things you need to know. Regular maintenance can keep your equipment in top working condition – so it works when you need it most. That’s why we want to see you schedule generator maintenance appointments at least once or twice a year. The spring and fall are great times.
When we come out, we will run your generator. This is a no-load cycle that will let us see how it works without burning through a bunch of fuel. We will also check your fuel and other fluid levels (coolant, oil and more), making sure nothing is leaking or empty. We will also check your settings to make sure everything is in working order and that the circuit breaker is closed.
Our technicians will also look at the generator as a whole, inspecting the enclosure, the battery connections, the belts and the coolant heater. We will look for leaks, clean or replace the air filter and inspect the AC wiring, the DC electrical system and the exhaust system.
Once we make sure that is all in good working order, our technicians will then change the oil if necessary and the oil filter. We’ll also inspect and possibly change the air filter and fuel filter. We will look at the spark plugs, coolant concentration and – if needed – flush the cooling systems and dry any moisture from your fuel tank.
These checks and maintenance tasks are necessary to keep your generator working well and combined with you doing regular maintenance on your own, should keep it in good working order for years to come.
It’s cheaper and less time consuming to regularly inspect and maintain your current generator than to have it replaced – or repaired.
And no one wants to find out during a power outage that their generator doesn’t work.
