Do you have a larger home? Why it is critical to consider choosing a backup power system this winter!
November 4, 2024When you need your generator to work, there is nothing more frustrating that it constantly shutting off. You need it when you need it – so here are a few troubleshooting ideas to get it back on track.
A generator that keeps shutting off is trying to tell you something – and that’s probably that there is a problem with its system. Luckily, there are a few easy troubleshooting things you can try to resolve the issue and keep the lights (and the heat) on this winter.
Here are some troubleshooting things to try for a generator that keeps shutting off:
- Overload: Is your generator having electrical overload? This is a common issue for many homeowners, and you can prevent it. Make sure that the things connected to the generator don’t exceed its rated capacity – this information can be found in your owner’s manual. If your generator is overloaded and shuts off, disconnect a few things and restart it. Chances are, it’ll work properly if given a proper load.
- Fuel: Always check your fuel level before starting your generator. Typically, they will need to be topped off with fresh fuel before starting.
- Oil levels: A generator that shuts off can also have low oil levels, which can – over time – limit the lifespan of your system. Make sure you measure the oil level periodically and add more if needed.
- Improper choke position: If you don’t properly set the choke position before starting, you can mess with the air-fuel mixture – which can cause your generator to shut off. So, take the time to make sure the choke is properly set – each and every time!
- Air filter: Just like your furnace, your generator needs a clean air filter to run properly. That’s because your generator needs clean air to work – and your air filter is working hard to block dirt and debris. So, if your generator has a dirty filter, it might shut off – and that’s a way to protect the engine!
If you’ve tried all of these things and your generator still isn’t working properly, be sure to call a trusted professional for help!
