Winter power outage survival kit: Four things you need to have on hand
November 16, 2020New generator? Here are some tips on breaking it in
March 4, 2021Your home generator system is a workhorse, not a show horse. It sits there waiting for a storm, a power outage. When you need it, it’s there, right?
But what if you need it and your home generator system doesn’t work? Unfortunately, it happens. If you are wondering whether it is time to replace your home generator system, here are four signs to look for.
Read on:
Age
If your home generator system can legally drink, it might be time to think about replacing it. But to be fair, it is more about the number of hours you’ve USED your system rather than its actual age. If you have had several power outages, or several long-term outages, your system might be reaching its peak. Even with proper maintenance, home generators last about 10,000-20,000 hours without maintenance or breakdowns.
Efficiency
Sometimes, your generator seems to be running fine but it’s using more fuel than it used to. This can be a sign that it isn’t as efficient as it could be which may mean it’s time to consider a new one.
Reliability
Is your generator slow to kick on during an outage? Is it not automatic or seamless anymore? This could be something that needs repaired or it could be time for a new system. Also, is your power supply consistent and steady while your generator is running? If so, you are all good. If not, and you have brownouts, you could need repairs – or a new system.
Frequent repairs
If you are experiencing any of the above, or if you have had to have your generator serviced more than once or twice a year, it’s probably time to consider a new system. A solid generator shouldn’t need more maintenance or repairs than that – after all, it is supposed to make your life easier, not harder.
